The trend is clear in the potato trade. Prices are under pressure and where the Belgians were lagging behind in the rising market a few months ago, they are now taking the lead in the current declining market.
It is quite remarkable how quickly the sentiment in the potato market can change. From: 'when will potato prices take the next step up' the prevailing sentiment is now much more: 'where is the bottom'. Belgium, Germany, and France were very unanimous in the last price round about the price for Fontane: €20, no more and no less. The Dutch PotatoNL deviates very significantly from the other countries of the EU-4 with €27 to €30 for the Fontane category. This puts the PotatoNL - which reports on Mondays - even higher than, for example, a Belgapom and Reka from the previous Friday.
Flattered
The DCA EU-4 Potato Index stands at €24.65 per 100 kilos this week. It is mainly due to the Dutch contribution that the drop in the Index is limited to €4.30 compared to a week earlier. With a somewhat critical look, it can be said that the Index therefore gives a flattered image of the potato market.
