The pace is slowing down for onion exporters

June 21, 2024 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

It doesn't want to get very busy in the onion export anymore. Compared to last week, the export has picked up, but it is not really breaking records.

In week 22, 12,525 tons of onions were exported, according to the figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That is more than 2,500 tons compared to week 21, but we are still below the five-year average of almost 14,000 tons. In total, 1.02 million tons of onions have been shipped this season. This puts the export 7.9% behind the same period last season.

The United Kingdom is and remains the largest buyer of onions with an import of 1,804 tons in week 22. Then follow Ivory Coast and Guinea with 1,384 and 1,015 tons respectively. These are not the only African countries in the top 10. Mauritania and Congo are also in the market for Dutch onions. Furthermore, there are European destinations in the export top 10.
