June is generally not the month Dutch onion exporters rely on. In the first full week of June this year, the export figure is approaching the five-year average for this period.
In week 23, 10,823 tons of onions were exported, according to the latest figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. This is just below the five-year average of 10,892 tons and about 2,000 tons less than in week 22. In total, 1.03 million tons of onions have been exported so far this season.
The United Kingdom was the main buyer of onions with 1,784 tons and was also the only destination that imported more than 1,000 tons. Ivory Coast ranks second on the list with 950 tons followed by Gambia, which imported 727 tons of onions from the Netherlands. In addition to African destinations, countries from the Caribbean and Central America are also present in the top 10. Jamaica, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic are in the top ten in week 23.
