Good growing conditions don't mean top carrot yields

August 30, 2024 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

There have been seasons when the irrigation equipment have made more hours. However, the relatively good growing season does not yet result in top yields for early carrots. What does that do to the market?

Fresh produce and supermarkets are the main customers for the Dutch carrot sector. The (overseas) export is quiet. Nothing strange for this time of year, says one washer, while the next one is somewhat concerned and has rarely experienced this before. Where washers are reasonably unanimous, is that it is not particularly busy. That can hardly be otherwise when the export is not yet in full swing.

Destination is decisive
Price records are not broken in the first DCA carrot listing of this season but the start is certainly not bad. The DCA Listing for both b and c carrots starts at €17 to €20 per 100 kilos. Partly because the retail sector is an important buyer, there is a little less need to fight over the price. Washers who buy carrots for those customers just want to have a good product. If the carrots are good, then a penny more or less does not make a difference. Early varieties are unfortunately somewhat sensitive to quality problems if they grow for too long. This is also noticeable in the trade. Growers who are more or less stuck with the carrots are also willing to pay €15 gladly or not.
