Africa has to do it for the onion export in the first half of the season, it is often said. Two traditionally large African buyers are also high on the list this week. The island on the other side of the North Sea is also doing well.
In week 34, the Netherlands exported 23,430 tons of onions, according to the figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That is more than 2,000 tons higher than in week 33 but slightly below the five-year average by nearly 4,000 tons. Last year in the same week, 25,400 tons were exported. Up to week 34, 135,379 tons have been exported. That is 6% less than last season.
Africa dominates the export market. Ivory Coast, like last week, is the largest buyer with 3,866 tons this week. Senegal follows closely with 3,484 tons. Great Britain is next at a distance with 2,996 tons. There were 5 countries that imported more than 1,000 tons. In total, Dutch onions were sent to 75 different countries. Estonia is at the bottom of the list with a bag of 5 kilograms.
