May 22, 2024 - Alex Jurvillier

The milk production in the United States in April was slightly behind the milk production of the same month last year. The US Department of Agriculture USDA reports a decrease of 0.2% compared to April of last year, considering the 24 largest dairy states.

Therefore, the milk supply in April is at 8.3 million tons. This is slightly above the level of April 2022 and above the average level over the past five years.

The production per cow in the 24 largest dairy states in April is estimated at 936.21 kilograms, which is 3.63 kilograms more than in April of last year. However, the dairy cow population decreased by 55,000 cows, resulting in a total of 8.89 million cows. This is 6,000 cows fewer than in March.

The average US Class III milk price for March 2024 is €38.45 per 100 kilograms. It has slightly increased but is still below the average of the last twelve months (€38.54), as reported by the international milk price comparator of EDF-ZuivelNL. The calculated advance milk price for the Dutch market for March 2024 is €44.47 per 100 kilograms of standard milk, which is significantly higher than the American price.
