The Australian milk supply is progressing relatively well this year. Dairy farmers down under are delivering more milk to the factories in the first months of this year on average than in the previous two years. Favorable weather conditions and a healthy dairy market are boosting the Australian dairy industry.
The milk supply in April of this year amounts to 591.8 million liters, 2.5% higher than in the same month last year. Compared to the five-year average of 604.57 million liters, milk production in April is slightly behind. Over the past two years, the Australian dairy sector has been affected by drought and low milk prices, leaving its mark on dairy farming.
The upward trend in production means that the milk supply in the first four months of 2024 is also higher than in the same period of the past two years. The milk supply from January to April this year amounts to over 2.5 billion liters. That was about 4.5% lower in the same period last year with just over 2.4 billion liters. The milk supply in 2022 was in between.
The Australian milk production seems to be heading in the right direction. The moderate weather conditions are boosting milk production, as stated in the latest report by industry organization Dairy Australia. In addition, dairy sales in the domestic market are going well with increasing sales volumes of dairy products, which is favorable for milk prices. 'There is confidence in the Australian dairy industry in the most stable period of the last decade,' writes Dairy Australia, as outlined in the National Dairy Farmer Survey of 2024.
