Vion sells a large part of its beef activities in Germany to Tönnies. The meat company in Boxtel states in a declaration that the companies have signed a principle agreement for this. The acquisition amount has not been disclosed. The deal, expected to be completed in the course of 2025, aligns with Vion's strategy to primarily focus on the markets in the Benelux.
If the cartel authorities approve, Tönnies will take over Vion's beef activities at the production sites in Buchloe, Crailsheim, and Waldkraiburg. In Crailsheim, pork is also produced, and Vion is also selling that production facility to Tönnies. The deboning facility in Hilden and the skin processing activities of BestHides in Memmingen and Eching-Weixerau are also part of the transaction. Vion will retain its shares in the beef factory in Furth im Wald in southern Germany. Tönnies has indicated that it will continue the activities for the time being, maintaining established supply chains and customer relationships.
Keeping promises
"This intended transaction is an important step in Vion's strategic reorientation," states Ronald Lotgerink, CEO of Vion, in the declaration. "We have promised to find the most capable partners to ensure a prosperous future development of the businesses to be divested, and we have also promised to increase our investments in the remaining businesses. We are now taking a new step in keeping our commitments."
Vion announced a few weeks ago that it will divest the slaughter and deboning locations of pigs in Vilshoven and Landshut.
