Pig market remains steady, despite more supply

September 27, 2024 - Wouter Baan

Although the sentiment in the meat market is certainly not bad, there is no movement in pig prices at all. An unexpectedly large increase in supply is one of the causes.

With 267,185 slaughters last week, the slaughter figure in the Netherlands was about 20,000 pigs lower than the same week last year. Also compared to previous years, much fewer pigs have been slaughtered lately. Nevertheless, pig traders have reported a rapid increase in supply since this week.

The growth slowdown from a few weeks ago has been reversed. This leads to extra slaughter-ready pigs. Sometimes traders even have to move pigs again, which according to them was months ago. The slaughterhouses are mostly full next week as well. Presumably, the slaughter figure will improve in the coming weeks.

In Germany, one day less will be slaughtered next week due to the celebration of German Unity Day on October 3. This also leads to a slightly larger supply. Sow slaughterings are also more difficult to market in Germany as a result.

Meat market quite positive
Nevertheless, the undertone in the market is certainly not negative overall. Meat prices are moving up again, except for necks that are under pressure. This is due to the transition from summer to autumn. Furthermore, Italy is requesting extra import hams due to the outbreaks of African swine fever in the Southern European country. The export of by-products outside Europe continues to be difficult.

Currently, there is no room for movement in pig prices. The DCA Market Price 2.0 remains unchanged for slaughtered pigs at €1.96 per kilogram. The price of live pigs remains stable at €1.54 per kilogram.
